Before you start a blog, it is very important that you carry out intensive research or let’s say enough research to help you understand what you’re getting into. Doing this will save you from making so many avoidable mistakes and get you prepared for things to come. One of the biggest mistakes I made when I started blogging was not doing any form of research at all.
In fact, I didn’t even bother with learning how to open a blog; I got my friend to do that for me. All I was interested in was writing and getting my article published and since it was for fun, I thought I didn’t need to know anything about running a blog except knowing where to edit my content and hit the publish button. Boy, I was so so wrong.
Whether, you are blogging for fun or you plan on making a career out of it, there are a lot of things you need to know, learn and unlearn about blogging in order to “enjoy” it. Trust me, passion or not, if you’re not armed with the right information before delving into it, you are going to be frustrated almost all the time trying to make sense of things.
In order to help you have a smoother and better blogging journey, I have put together a list of some of the very important things you need to know before you start a blog.
Blogging Is Not As Easy As A Lot Of Bloggers Make It Look:
This is a very key thing to note; blogging takes a lot of CONSISTENT hard work. It takes a lot to actually run a blog; especially for those who want to make some form of income from it. Honestly, it is not a walk in the park at all. You have to work to build your audience, get them to read and engage with your content, get them to share them, source for brands to work with and so on.
In fact, depending on your niche, you have to also bother with video shoots, photo shoots, locations to shoot; honestly, it is a lot of hard work. With blogging, you also have to learn a lot of essential skills that will help you be better at what you do. So, blogging is not easy at all but totally worth it if you are willing and patient enough to put in the work required.
You Need To Identify Your Niche:
I can never emphasize the importance of having a niche enough; it is so important to your growth as a blogger. Having a niche or a specific interest you will like to blog about helps you stand out, establish your authority as a blogger, helps you build your selling power as an influencer and it helps you work with a clear direction in mind.
With a niche, you have better chances of being consistent as you can easily come up with topics by identifying the needs of your audience, interests and concerns. It will also increases your money making chances are you know exactly what your audience need, what you have to offer and what kinds of brand to approach.
In a nutshell, having a focal niche is what gives you a voice and differentiates you from other bloggers.
Where Content Is King, Consistency Is EVERYTHING:
I know you have heard the content is king mantra but it is no joke. You have to be willing to churn out AMAZING and VALUABLE content on your blog and social media platforms. The kind of content you put out will determine the caliber and strength of your online community. So, never, ever joke with GREAT content.
On the other hand, where great content is the key to building a strong online community, being inconsistent can break you. Yes, inconsistency can make all your hard work very irrelevant. So, in line with churning out valuable content, you have to show up all the time.
You Have To Be Willing To Learn:
If you want to keep staying on top of your game as a blogger, you have to be willing to learn and with blogging, there is so much to learn. You have to be willing to learn about how to set up and customize your blog, SEO (Search Engine Optimization), copyright issues, the different channels to make money, how to use social media effectively to promote your blog, how to network, how to take and edit pictures and so on.
The list of things to learn as a blogger is endless and because of change in web algorithm, you can’t stop learning. So, as a blogger, you have to willing to dedicate some time to learning, unlearning and relearning in order to grow
You Have To Be Authentic:
The truth is there are so many amazing bloggers out here and you are not the only one with that awesome idea that you think is unique. So, you will pretty much find people who are doing the same thing as you and maybe even better. However, I have come to realize that being real, original or being yourself is the best way to attract and build a loyal community.
When people can find you honest and relatable, they will want to stick around. There is always something special that you have that others don’t have, so, use that an advantage to stand yourself out even better as a blogger.
In conclusion, blogging is fun: it will open you a totally new and exciting world, new people, new skills fun adventures. In fact, I have come to discover so much more about myself and my special talents since I started blogging about 7 years ago. So, yes, you are going to have a lot of fun on your blogging journey but you will also have to work hard.
I have also come to realize blogging is not for everyone; there are lots of bloggers who give up half way because they are just to frustrated with the little or no result they are getting. So, my advise is to start by contributing on various blogs or open a free WordPress blog to be certain you are really cut out for the blogging life.
You can also sit with an old blogger or an expert to get an insight to what their blogging journey is like (be careful about this though as I have also come to realize people’s experience sometimes differ. So, go with an open mind and ask as much questions as they will allow).
